strip.film
[an emulsionous installation]
by scott berry
in the Anthology Courthouse Lobby, 2nd Floor
strip.film consists of two filmstrip projectors side-by-side, loaded with what was formerly 35mm straight porn, that with some bleach, painting and acetate copying, has been détourned to include images of: persons I wish were/could be in porn, myself, and transferred images from actual porn.
Further, on the first few nights of the festival, I will hold scheduled "strip.film" time, where folks can be captured on 35mm still photos stripping, posing and getting sassy with the camera in their own special ways. These filmstrips will end up in the projectors the following day for others to enjoy. The filmstrips are meant to be moved by festival-goers. And of course, they are encouraged to get involved in making their own strip.films.
This installation is called strip.film for two reasons: there is physical stripping of the film emulsion, a recent personal obsession; and also to address sexual usage, abusage and re-usage of public and pornographic space. --S. Berry
Video Kouros
by Tara Mateik
video sculpture (video projection, plexi-glass, rope)
in the Anthology Gallery, Lower Level
Within the history of the bust as a sculptural object, Video Kouros reconfigures the classical Greek bust of a budding young boy. While Greek Archaic statues concentrate on the expression of natural perfection of the human form, they appear less natural, similar to a surgically altered chest. The 3 foot projected "bust" illuminates through a plexi-glass sculpture of surgical marks that stand inches from the wall. The sculpture throws a shadow of the suture marks onto the projected image. The shadows of the stitches emphasize the aesthetic of the surgically altered chest as a point of pleasure rather than disgust. --T. Mateik
