Not
unlike New York, most Brazilians view Sao Paulo as a land of neurotic
people and workaholics. The city has become a Portuguese-language
media capitol, developed a huge fashion industry and emerged as
the hottest gay scene in Latin America. (In June more than 120,000
people celebrated Gay Pride here.) This megalomaniac chaos is based
on the “antropofagia,” the culture of frenetically consuming the
latest international trends and appropriating them in an original
way. The program also presents Rio 2000, an ecstatic New Year’s
celebration in this wonderful city.
